Hey Reader,

Here’s to an awesome year unfolding ahead! 🎉

Take a sec and think about this…

Which is the hardest to “Control”?

  • The way you Look
  • The way you Feel
  • The way you Sound

The way you “Feel” of course.

We’ll spend 40 minutes scrolling through glasses frames to find the perfect pair. We’ll agonize over whether to go with the navy blazer or the charcoal one.

We’ll spend weeks debating hairstyle choices.

But our voice? The thing people actually hear every time we open our mouths?

Yeah, we just assume that’s a done deal. Like it came with our birth certificate, and there’s nothing we can do about it. That’s like saying your hair is just “done” because it grows out of your head.

Here’s the thing, though… Your voice isn’t stuck.

Neither is the way you USE it.

And if you’re hosting a podcast or running a meeting, the way you ‘sound’ is doing WAY more heavy lifting than you think.

It’s either building trust or breaking it. Making people lean in or tune out.

Telling them you’re confident and know your stuff, or that you’re just winging it and hoping nobody notices.

The good news? You can actually change this stuff.

And it’s easier than you think.

Start with “Volume”. Talking louder (not yelling, just projecting) instantly makes you sound more sure of yourself.

“Low talkers” get pegged as uncertain, even when they’re not. It’s not fair, but it’s true.

Then there’s your face, Reader…

Sounds dumb, but ‘smiling’ while you talk makes your words sound “warmer”.

Even on the phone (or a podcast) where nobody sees you.

Your audience can hear it.

And your hands?

Use them. Open gestures make you seem approachable. Closed-off body language makes people wonder what you’re hiding, even if you’re hiding nothing.

Here’s the wild part: when you start looking and sounding more confident, your brain starts to believe it.

You actually “Feel” more confident.

It’s like tricking yourself into being the person you want to be.

So yeah, we change our hair. We buy new shoes.

But we never think to change “how” we communicate.

If you’re ready to sound like someone people trust and want to listen to, I can help. I’ll give you real, actionable tips you can use right away.

No pressure, no weird sales pitch.

Stellar Marketing Quotes

“Good marketing makes the company look smart. Great marketing makes the customer feel smart.”

Joe Chernov

“The future of marketing is simple: stop interrupting what people care about, and become what they care about.”

Brian Clark

“Behind the Mic”

“Na-vay-da” will always haunt me.

Radio stations love a good January “reinvention”.

New year, new format, new call letters, new you standing at the mic wondering why your mouth keeps saying the OLD station name.

Your brain’s been trained. Two years of “Power 92” doesn’t just disappear because corporate decided you’re now “Cozy 106.5.”

Every break, every segue, you’re fighting muscle memory. Except it’s not muscles, it’s your mouth, and it’s losing the battle.

Format flips are even weirder.

Going from Rock to Country means learning a whole new vocabulary.

Suddenly you’re NOT allowed to say certain words on the air!

Your playlist goes from the Stones to… well, not the Stones.

But here’s what really messes with your head: moving to a new city in a completely different part of the country.

Because now you’re not just learning new call letters. You’re learning that Nevada, Iowa is pronounced “Na-vay-da” and everyone in town is listening, waiting for you to screw it up.

Which you will. Repeatedly.

Smart stations know this. The best ones give you a fighting chance.

When I landed in San Diego, they put me in a limo for two days with a tour guide.

We drove everywhere.

She pointed out landmarks, taught me pronunciations, explained local quirks.

By day three, I knew “America’s Finest City” like I’d been there for years.

Because listeners can smell an “outsider”. Mispronounce one suburb, butcher one team mascot, and your credibility’s shot. They’ll call. They’ll email.

They’ll let you know.

The thing is, nobody taught me this stuff before I needed it. I learned by screwing up, by being that guy who didn’t know the rules.

No beer sales on Sundays in Kansas. Can’t pump your own gas in Portland.

And Salt Lake City… let’s just say there’s a whole manual I wish I’d read first.

After all, would you trust a guy on the Radio who mispronounced a team mascot or the name of a suburb?

No.

(And you may pick up the phone to let them know!)
