Hey Reader,

You know what makes me want to throw my headphones across the room?

When someone reads their script like they’re announcing train delays at a bus station. Same flat tone. Same predictable rhythm. Every sentence sounds exactly like the one before it.

Zzzzz.

Your voice is not a “hammer”.

I’ve been judging Radio Star this week – it’s the only International Radio Talent Search, and where I get to hear voices from literally everywhere. And here’s what blows my mind: whether they’re from Brazil or Belgium, the ones who sound boring all make the same mistake.

They’re USING their voice when they should be PLAYING with it.

Think about it. You don’t “use” a guitar. You don’t “use” a piano. You play them. Your voice is the same deal – it’s an instrument, and instruments are meant to be played.

When you play with your voice, you can completely change what words mean. Try this in your head:

“THIS is the best I’ve ever had.”

“This is the BEST I’ve ever had.”

“This is the best I’ve EVER HAD.”

Same exact words. Totally different vibe, right?

And that’s just one trick. You’ve got speed (talk faster when you’re excited about something). You’ve got tone (angry sounds different than curious, obviously). You’ve even got the magical “pause”… which can make people lean in and actually pay attention.

The best part? You can practice this stuff anywhere. I do my grocery list like I’m hosting a game show…

“And NOW we have… PEANUT BUTTER!”

My family thinks I’m nuts, but whatever.

You already do this when you read bedtime stories to kids. You do the voices. You get dramatic. You make it fun. That’s exactly what I’m talking about, just applied to your podcast or event.

Let’s make your voice way more interesting.

“Behind the Mic”

Morning hair and why partners matter…

You know what nobody tells you about working with a partner?

That you’ll know exactly how they look at 4:45 AM. Before coffee. Before combs. Before they’ve decided whether to be a human that day.

I’ve spent nearly 40 years waking up next to Radio partners (not like that, settle down). And here’s what I learned: the best ones aren’t afraid to look like hell in front of you.

More importantly, they’re not afraid to tell you when YOUR idea looks like hell.

My co-hosts over the years? I’ve worked with guys…

Like in San Diego, where you could tune into “Royce & The World Famous Goatboy”.

Other “partners” were absolute knockouts. One was literally Miss Oregon. Another came straight from TV news, where looking camera-ready was her whole thing.

But at 5 AM? We’re talking bedhead, yesterday’s mascara, and outfits that would make a fashion blogger weep.

The magic wasn’t in how they looked. It was in how “real” they were willing to be.

Because when you’re trapped together in a studio before sunrise, five days a week, you can’t fake it. You become this weird little team… A “Couple”.

You know each other’s relationship drama. You’ve heard about the dog’s emergency vet visit. You’ve witnessed the meltdown over a bounced check.

You’re in a foxhole in the middle of a circus.

And the really good partners? They’ll stop you mid-sentence and say “that’s terrible” when you’re about to say something stupid on air. They’ll laugh at the actually funny stuff (and that laugh makes everything better).

They keep you sharp because they’re not there to nod along like a bobblehead.

Whether you’re hosting a podcast, running an event, or trying to keep an audience awake and interested, having that kind of partner changes everything.

The trick is finding someone who gets it. Who knows when to jump in, when to shut up, and when to tell you you’re being an idiot.

I’d love to talk with you about building that kind of dynamic, whether you’ve got a partner already or you’re flying solo and wondering if you should be. Grab a free 15-minute chat with me and let’s figure out what’s working (and what’s not) with your show or event.

No pressure, no pitch, just real talk from someone who’s been there.
