Hey Reader,

Just want to say, thanks for being “You”!

Ever have trouble reaching your ‘target’ audience?

Here’s something I (finally) figured out…

“Associations” exist for literally everything!

The Association of Professional Sleep Consultants is a real thing.

So is the American Sand Sculpting Association. And one of my favorites, the Portable Sanitation Association.

(because someone has to champion those porta-potties).

There’s literally an association for pet sitters. Professional whistlers. Balloon artists. If you can think of it, there’s probably a group of people who’ve organized around it and meet quarterly at a Holiday Inn Express.

Why am I telling you this? Because these associations are goldmines for finding your exact audience.

Think about it. Instead of shouting into the social media void, hoping your ideal listener stumbles across your podcast (or Business), you could be reaching people who’ve already raised their hands and said…

“Yes, I’m obsessed with this specific thing.”

Want to promote your show about sustainable gardening? Hello, Urban Agriculture Association. Got a podcast about vintage motorcycles? Meet the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. These people gather voluntarily to talk about the stuff you’re podcasting about.

The best part? Many associations don’t just have member lists – they have contact info.

Names, addresses, sometimes even emails. It’s like having a direct line to people who are guaranteed to care about your topic.

No more crossing your fingers that your content finds the right people.

You’re bringing your content directly to people who already love the subject.

But here’s the thing – once you get in front of your perfect audience, you’d better know how to KEEP them listening.

Because finding people is only half the battle. The other half is making sure they stick around.

I can help. Check out the links below.

“Behind the Mic”

My first Radio job (while still in High School) was at the legendary Ten-Q in Los Angeles. I’ll share some crazy stories about working there in an upcoming issue.

My first real DJ gig was in the metropolis of Bullhead City, AZ. ???

Why?

Because my parents owned a vacation home there, right on the Colorado River! No rent… our own dock, and one Radio station.

I still like to kid, “I started in LA, and worked my way down!”

The station was what we call in the industry, “Block formatted”.

So you would play different types of programs throughout the day.

Some light popular music and News in the mornings. Mellow Jazz for Lunchtime. Country music in the afternoon and starting at 7:00 PM… Rock!

Guess which shift I had!

It was the job of a lifetime. I would come right off the River after water skiing, bathing suit still wet, read the News at 6:00 PM, and then start “Dinner Date”, giant reel-to-reel tapes of soothing, beautiful music.

Then the fun started, I was allowed to choose the music, take requests, and of course set up “dates” on the request line! (C’mon, I was 19!)

I was “Famous”! (in a town with no traffic lights!)

It was a ‘task’ to figure out which party(s) I wanted to ‘attend’.

The liquor store guys knew I wouldn’t “rat” when they sold me a 12-pack of brew.

I’d get an extra steak from the butcher.

You’re basically the town’s unofficial Mayor of Cool.

Of course, like most “creatives”, I wanted to move to the “Big time”.

(especially since I’d seen it “up close” in LA)

So off I went to a “real” city, Tucson.

The “Markets” kept getting bigger, and they all have ‘stories’ of their own! 😅
