Hey Reader,
Here’s something I’ve (finally) learned: “failures” are just “Samples”.
Your nephew’s pasta disaster wasn’t a failure – it was expensive market research. The cement noodles, flaming sauce, and mysteriously broken wooden spoon? That’s just ‘data’ with marinara stains.
Tech companies figured this out ages ago.
When Amazon’s Fire Phone crashed and burned harder than your nephew’s dinner date, they didn’t throw a pity party.
They collected every piece of feedback, every complaint, every “this sucks” review and turned it into samples for their next experiment. The output?
A smart speaker that now lives in half the homes in America, judging our music choices. (Alexa)
Google’s graveyard of dead products reads like a tech obituary. Google Wave, Google Plus, Google Glass (RIP). But here’s the thing – each spectacular flameout wasn’t about the outcome…
It was about the “Output”!
The lessons, the user behavior data, the “oh, THAT’s why people hate this” moments that fuel their next billion-dollar idea.
Most of us get hung up on outcomes.
Did it work or didn’t it?
Success or failure?
Binary thinking for a messy world.
But when you focus on output – what you learned, what data you collected, what “samples” you gathered – suddenly every flop becomes valuable inventory.
You have a ‘Feature’ that doesn’t seem to work? Ya know, the one that made the audience more bored than a DMV waiting room?
They’re teaching you what doesn’t land so you can figure out what WILL.
The magic isn’t in avoiding disasters – it’s in mining them for gold.
Focus on “Output”… not “Outcomes”.
If you’re ready to turn your collection of “oops” moments into your competitive advantage, let’s dig into what those samples are telling you.
I’m offering (free) fifteen-minute discovery calls where we’ll look at your specific challenges and I’ll give you actionable ways to extract value from every messy moment.
No pitch, just practical wisdom from someone who’s collected more samples than a Costco weekend. (link below)
Stellar Marketing Quotes
“The beautiful thing about podcasting is it’s just talking. It can be funny, or it can be terrifying. It can be sweet. It can be obnoxious. It almost has no definitive form.”
Joe Rogan
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
Maya Angelou
I’ve done a lot of crazy stunts throughout my Radio career.
Here’s one that upset the public to no end…
A shiny new golf resort wanted “buzz”, so someone pitched the “genius” idea of having me and my Morning Show partner putt a golf ball FROM the course, five miles through downtown streets!
So how did we keep from getting killed while putting down city streets full of cars?
We arranged for a Police escort! (Think funeral procession.)
Cop car in front, unit behind.
Motorcycle cops stopping traffic at intersections.
What could possibly go wrong?
Everything.
We soon realized you can’t ‘Drive’ a golf ball down a street without blasting a few windows! So, we had to “putt” as far as we could.
It took us 4 days!
People were pissed!
Traffic backed up for miles.
Drivers honking, yelling at the cops, telling US things about our Mothers!
The whole city basically wanted to use our putters as weapons against us.
We got TV coverage, alright – four days of pure chaos that had reporters “highlighting” our every terrible shot.
And somehow the whole mess turned into ‘appointment’ television.
The golf resort got exactly what they wanted: everyone in Tucson talking about THEM.
Sometimes the best marketing happens when everything falls apart in the most entertaining way possible.
