Let’s talk about…Why podcasting feels scarier than karaoke.

Podcasting is the only hobby where people research equipment for three months, download seventeen apps, and then never hit ‘record’.

It’s like buying a gym membership and spending all your time organizing your workout playlist. You’ve got the gear, you’ve got the plan, but somehow you’re still sitting on the couch.

The tech stuff freaks people out first. All those microphones with names that sound like alien spacecraft. Audio interfaces that require an engineering degree to understand. Software with more buttons than a NASA control panel.

Then there’s the voice thing. You know that feeling when you hear yourself on a voicemail and think, “Do I really sound like a dying walrus?” You imagine broadcasting that voice to the world. On purpose.

And what if you run out of things to say after episode two? What if your brilliant podcast idea about collecting vintage bottle caps doesn’t exactly set the world on fire? What if you pour your heart into creating something and the download counter stays at a big fat zero?

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about podcasting fears – they’re all FIXABLE problems, not personality flaws.

The tech gets easier once someone shows you which three buttons actually matter (spoiler: it’s not seventeen). Your voice sounds weird to you because you’re not used to hearing it, but everyone else thinks it sounds perfectly normal.

And running out of content? That usually happens when you’re trying to be someone else instead of just being yourself.

The download thing though – that one stings because it feels personal.

But even the biggest podcasters started with zero downloads and probably their Mom as their only subscriber.

I spent many years as a Radio station Program Director.

Which meant I hired and fired DJs.

One of my most ‘unique’ hires was Donnie Staten.

He was fresh out of broadcasting school and had never been on a ‘real’ Radio station.

That wasn’t the strange part… Donnie was born without Arms!

He did everything with his Feet!

In one move, he can pull an album from a sleeve and lay it on the turntable with his TOES!

His ‘foot-writing penmanship’ looked like calligraphy compared to mine!

I helped him grow into his ‘personality’, with the occasional reminder to stop leaving ‘toe prints’ on the records!

We also became friends off the air. (still are!)

One day, when I picked him up, I walked in to see him standing on a chair with his foot in the sink.

I asked him, “What are you doing?” He shot me the most “are you stupid?” look ever and said, “I’m washing dishes! What do you think I’m doing?”

You might think you don’t have the “right” voice.

Or that you’ll freeze up when talking to guests.

But here’s what I learned from watching Donnie work his magic on the Radio: it’s not about having perfect conditions.

It’s about adapting to what you HAVE and making it work brilliantly.
