Hey Reader,
Thanks so much for giving me some of your precious time.
Let’s not waste a second…
Ever notice how we treat ‘unknown’ phone numbers like they’re carrying the plague?
That random call pops up, and we stare at it like it might explode.
We’d rather let it go to voicemail and then spend ten minutes googling the number to see if it’s a scammer or our dentist’s office.
Same thing happens in the podcast world. You wouldn’t put a complete stranger on your show, right?
That’d be like inviting someone to Thanksgiving dinner because they knocked on your door.
But here’s the thing that puzzles me about podcasters. They’ll spend hours perfecting their intro music and buying fancy microphones, then completely ‘wing it’ when it comes to connecting with potential guests or getting booked on other shows.
It’s like showing up to a job interview in a tuxedo but forgetting to bring a resume.
That’s where the magic of a “one-sheet” comes in.
Think of it as your podcast dating profile, minus the awkward bathroom selfies. It’s literally one page that tells people exactly who you are and WHY they should care.
A good one-sheet isn’t just your bio copy-pasted onto pretty paper. It needs your contact info, sure, but more importantly – it needs a compelling reason WHY you belong on that show.
What’s your angle?
What makes you different from the 47 other people pitching that host this week?
And here’s the genius part – include sample questions. Make the host’s job easier. They’re already juggling seventeen things, so hand them a roadmap to a great interview.
Podcasters need them too. You’re not just hunting for listeners, you’re trying to attract the ‘right’ guests who’ll make your show shine brighter than a freshly waxed car.
The difference between hosts who struggle to book great guests and those who have people lining up?
They know how to present themselves and their show professionally.
Create a one-sheet you can ‘drop’ with a link.
I’ve included my latest “one-sheet” so you can get some ideas…
Stellar Marketing Quotes
“The best podcasts make you feel like you’re eavesdropping on something real, something raw.”
Sarah Koenig
“The first role of marketing is to make a decision easy to make. And that means firstly clarity in terms of choice, and secondly it means lack of anxiety.”
Rory Sutherland – VP Ogilvy
You know that moment when someone asks if you want to do something completely insane and your brain screams “YES” before logic kicks in?
Picture this: My Radio station, (KCBQ San Diego) wanted to prove we have the BEST “Traffic reports”, that we rented a freaking Learjet.
Not just any jet – one wrapped in giant station logos like a flying billboard.
The mission? Break the world record for fastest traffic report covering the largest area. Because apparently, normal traffic reports from helicopters are for amateurs.
So there’s me, broadcasting live from 20,000 feet while zipping over San Diego at breakneck speed. Air traffic control is probably wondering what kind of circus just entered their airspace.
But here’s where it gets really good.
We’re heading to land at the Miramar Naval Air Station during their air show. Our pilots – former naval aviators who clearly miss the adrenaline rush – yell back from the cockpit with the most casual question ever:
“Hey, you guys cool with us doing a roll?”
Not one roll. Two rolls. In a Learjet. During a live broadcast.
Being a pilot myself —let’s count that as awesomeness.
Most people would’ve needed new pants after that experience.
The thing is, keeping an audience glued to their seats (or podcasts) isn’t about pulling crazy stunts every day. It’s about knowing how to create those “holy crap, what happens next?” moments that make people lean in closer.
