Hey Reader, so glad you made it!

Hopefully you’re not ‘melting’ or knee-deep in water! (crazy weather)

I’d love you to ponder this…

Confidence is built in the checkout line

The barista doesn’t care. The cashier at Target won’t remember your name. The person walking their golden retriever has already forgotten you exist.

And that’s exactly why they’re your most valuable “practice” audience.

Here’s something that trips up a lot of people…They save their best energy for the “big moments.” The important interview. The keynote introduction.

The panel they’ve been prepping for since March.

But confidence doesn’t show up on command just because the stakes are high.

It shows up because you’ve been quietly logging reps when nobody’s watching.

Order your coffee like you mean it. Slow down. Project. Make actual eye contact with your server instead of staring at your phone. Strike up a twenty-second conversation with the grocery cashier. Ask the museum volunteer a genuinely curious question. Compliment a stranger’s dog like you’re wrapping up a solid interview segment.

These moments feel ridiculous, and that’s the whole point. The stakes are so low that you can actually focus on HOW you’re communicating instead of WHAT you’re saying.

Here’s what most people get wrong about building confidence…

They think it lives inside the “big moments.” The important interview. The packed auditorium. The guest with 2 million followers.

It doesn’t.

Confidence is built during the moments nobody’s grading.

The grocery cashier. The stranger’s dog you compliment. The museum volunteer you ask a random question just to practice projecting your voice. These are your real reps, and they’re completely free.

Think about it like this: by the time you step up to welcome 500 people into a room, you’ve already done the work. Hundreds of low-pressure reps with people who will never know they were your “practice” audience.

By the time that big podcast interview rolls around, or the moment you’re introducing a keynote speaker to a room full of people, you’ve already done the work. Hundreds of low-pressure reps, disguised as “everyday life”.

Treat strangers like your practice audience.

They’ll never know they volunteered for the job.

That’s exactly what a free fifteen-minute chat with me is all about. No pitch, no pressure. Just a real conversation about what’s holding you back, and a few things you can actually do about it this week.

“Behind the Mic”

The win that made me feel “slow”.

There was a charity race in Kansas City when I was on the air at KCMO.

All the big Radio stations would supply a “personality”.

What nobody bothered to tell us “DJ types” beforehand was that we’d be racing on a “dirt” track!

Alcohol-fueled sprint cars. The kind where you go completely sideways around the turns like you’re auditioning for a Fast and Furious movie.

There I was, buckled into a sprint car with a five-point harness, no windshield, and a race team breathing down my neck with one very clear message:

Do NOT hit anything.”

No pressure.

I started in third place. Dirt flying everywhere. No windshield between me and what felt like certain doom. And somehow, against all odds, I passed two cars and crossed the finish line FIRST.

Winner! Champion! Racing legend!

I was pumped. Arms in the air. Ready to accept my trophy and maybe a sponsorship deal.

Then they put my top speed on the giant scoreboard…

56 mph.

Fifty. Six. Miles. Per. Hour.

My grandmother drives faster than that on the way to church. But hey, a win is a win, right?

Here’s what that gloriously humbling moment taught me: sometimes what feels like peak performance is just the ‘beginning’ of what’s actually possible.

You think you’re crushing it, and then the scoreboard reveals there’s a whole other gear you haven’t touched yet.
