Hey Reader,

You know what nobody admits, but everyone feels? That sinking moment when you’re mid-podcast and you just KNOW people are zoning out.

Maybe they’re still technically listening. Earbuds in, volume up. But their brain left three minutes ago to scroll Instagram or plan what’s for dinner.

It’s not your fault. Well, not entirely.

Here’s the thing: great content isn’t enough. Four Radio stations could play the same songs, but only one had people racing to their cars at 7am to catch the morning show. The difference? They made people PART of it.

When I worked in Radio, we didn’t just talk “at” people. We pulled them in. Made them players instead of spectators. And suddenly, boring commutes became must-listen moments.

The trick isn’t complicated. It’s “gamification” without the cringe.

I’m talking simple stuff. Trivia questions announced at the top, answered at the end. (Boom, you just guaranteed they’ll stick around.) Giveaways that don’t require a trust fund. Free merch, a newsletter subscription, even a 15-minute call with you.

Or get weird with it.

Hide messages on the bottom of your coffee cup during a webinar and make people track them. Play a mystery sound throughout your show. Count how many times you say a specific word.

The best part? This works whether you’re live or recorded. Email collection, website forms, social media comments. You’re giving people a reason to engage AND building your list at the same time.

People don’t just want to consume content anymore. They want to feel like they’re IN on something. Like they’re part of your world, not just watching from outside the window.

And that’s exactly what we can work on together. If your podcast or event could use a shot of “wait, what just happened, I need to pay attention,” let’s talk about it. (link below)

Stellar Marketing Quotes

“Content is king, but engagement is queen, and the lady rules the house.”

“If you’re not putting out relevant content in relevant places, you don’t exist.”

My Boss gave me 10k to buy anything!

“When you see birds flying in a “V” formation… why is it always LONGER on one side?”

Did you get it? Don’t feel bad. Nobody does at first.

That was one of my favorite trivia questions when I was a Radio Program Director running a “Mystery Prize” promotion.

The contestants had no clue WHAT they were playing for.

The DJ had no clue either.

And honestly? That made it way more fun.

Picture this: You win. You pick Door Number 2. The audio plays and reveals your prize.

It could be a massive TV worth thousands. Or it could be a pack of bungee cords from the clearance bin.

The best part of MY job? Getting handed $10,000 and told to go shopping at Costco for completely random prizes. Talk about living the dream.

I’d wander the aisles eating free samples (mini pizzas, mystery spreads on crackers, you name it). Loading up the cart with the coolest stuff I could find. And the weirdest. A high-end refrigerator next to a jumbo pack of pool noodles. A leather recliner beside a case of beef jerky.

Zero attachment to any of it. Just pure fun with someone else’s money.

Here’s what made the promotion work: surprise. Anticipation. The fact that NOBODY knew what was coming next, not even the people running it.

And you know what? That same energy is what keeps audiences hooked when you’re hosting an event or recording a podcast episode. The unexpected moments. The genuine reactions. The feeling that anything could happen.

But here’s the thing. Creating that kind of engagement doesn’t just happen by accident. It takes skill. Timing. Knowing exactly when to lean in and when to let the moment breathe.

If you’re a podcaster who wants sharper interview skills, or an event host looking to keep your audience glued to their seats, I can help.

(BTW, if my opening question is driving you nuts, the answer is “Because there are MORE birds on that side!”)
