Hey Reader,

I have some good news…

Your voice isn’t “stuck”, you know.

We walk around thinking, “this is just how I sound”, like it’s some unchangeable fact written into our DNA.

Nope.

Neither is that mumbly thing you do. Or the way your voice goes up at the end of sentences, like everything’s a question? Or how you rush through words so fast, people have to ask you to repeat yourself.

Your voice isn’t some fixed thing you’re sentenced to for life.

It’s not like your height or shoe size.

You’re actually choosing how you sound right now.

And you probably don’t even realize it.

Think about it. You learned to talk by copying the people around you.

Your mom’s rhythm. Your dad’s volume. Friends that talk like (who knows!)

You absorbed it all like a sponge wearing tiny human clothes.

But somewhere along the way, you stopped experimenting.

You settled into a voice and figured, “Welp, this is me now.”

Except it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s the thing most people never figure out: if you copied it once, you can copy something else. You can change it!

You can change how you use your lips. How you breathe. Your pace, your volume, even what you do with your face while talking.

(Yes, your face affects your voice. Wild, right?)

And if you’re someone who talks for a living, like on a podcast or in front of an audience at events, this matters more than you think.

Because the way you sound is half the battle. Maybe more than half.

You can have the best questions, the smartest insights, the funniest stories.

But if people can’t follow you because you’re talking too fast, or they tune out because your tone puts them to sleep, or they get distracted by that weird thing you do with your voice when you get excited, you’re losing them.

The way you sound isn’t just about being heard. It’s about being listened to.

And that’s “trainable”, Reader.

Since you’re one of the amazing people reading this newsletter, I’ve got a gift for you! It’s my new guide… “Mic-Shy to Camera-Confident”. (short video below)

Three stories up with a drunk guy…

Ever realize your boss is terrible at tying knots?

Mine happened while I was trapped in a tent three stories above a parking lot. For charity, obviously. Because nothing says “please donate to MDA” like watching a Radio guy live in the sky… for a WEEK.

The setup was wild. A scissor lift raised to three stories. A tent on top. Me inside doing my afternoon show. For five days straight, the platform wouldn’t come down. Not once.

I survived on (awesome) restaurant food hoisted up in buckets. I had a camping toilet that my program director had to empty using a rope system.

(The same guy who dreamed up this whole stunt.)

The same guy who apparently skipped every knot-tying lesson ever invented.

One afternoon, after I emptied my toilet into the “special bucket”, I started lowering it down. About 20 feet from the ground, his knot failed.

The bucket crashed.

Brown explosion everywhere.

He spent an hour hosing down the parking lot while I watched from my sky prison, wondering if this was really the best use of anyone’s time.

But the real fun started at 2 AM on day three.

I heard my tent flap UNZIP! From three stories up. Where there’s no ladder.

Just greased crossbars that are (seemingly) impossible to climb.

Some drunk guy somehow scaled that thing and was now crawling into my tent. The station was too cheap for security, but my paranoid program director had insisted I bring a gun. I grabbed it and kept it hidden while this stranger hovered over me.

“Hey man, you’re that Radio guy, right?”

He thought he was crashing a party. I told him to leave in VERY direct terms.

He climbed back down, confused and stumbling.

We raised tons of money. Got tons of press.

Could have gotten sued into oblivion if that guy had fallen. Worth it? Probably not. Memorable? Absolutely.

Here’s what I learned: Preparation matters. Knowing what could go wrong matters. And having someone who actually knows what they’re doing matters even more.

That’s exactly what I offer in my Free Coaching calls. Whether you’re hosting a podcast or running live events, I’ll listen to your challenges and give you actionable tips you can use right away. No selling allowed!
